Top-300 for 2011
March 11th, 2011 | by Ray Flowers |I’m nothing if not charming, intelligent and modest. I also listen closely to what you, the readers, want to see, and I received a bunch of notes asking me to list my top-250 for the 2011 season. Being the overachiever that I am I decided 250 wasn’t enough, so I decided to produce a top-300 for your review.
Let me be clear about a couple of things.
(1) This list is as of today. Due to the uncertainty with the knee of Chase Utley he is ranked at #45. Because of continued back woes Brian Roberts is down at #151. If both were healthy they would be ranked higher.
(2) This list reflects some personal bias of mine. Others might rank catchers, starters and closers higher than I have, but if you’ve read my work or listened to my radio show, you ill know that I’m always a bit reluctant to reach on players who play those positions.
(3) Yes, I really did rank Adrian Gonzalez at #22. We’ll see if I’m right or if everyone else is.
Without further ado, here you are my friends. Enjoy.

Do you really think Miggy is #13? That has to be assuming he will get suspended or DL’d at some point, right? Because we can all pretty much acknowledge the guy has been drunk his whole career and posted the #’s he has. So if he plays without suspension, do you feel his #’s will take a hit?
By Ray Flowers on Mar 11, 2011
Ben-Miggy at #13 reflects the uncertainty.
IF he plays 150 games, he’s top-10.
Will he make it that far? Maybe, but I’m simply not going to take on that risk.
By Bryan on Mar 11, 2011
Great stuff Ray, love the work you put in here and on twitter.
I know you like Braun at #3 this year but I’m wondering how big a concern his corresponding drop in power and increase in GB/FB rate is? He’s coming off his worst season and while he was outstanding to begin and end the year, he was a complete mess May-July. I know CarGo only has 1.5 years on his resume but it seems like he could regress and still be worth a Top 5 pick. Is your ranking of the two mainly a case of safety over ceiling?
Also you’re the only avid NL West follower I’ve seen who doesn’t think Adrian will set career highs across the board away from Petco. I really like your argument though. Thanks again.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 11, 2011
Bryan-
Braun is the consistent, safe option. He’s been a stud year after year, his worst 5×5 effort would be .285-25-97-91-14. I’ll take that as a worst effort. Yes, his rising GB rate is a concern. You can’t hit 50% of balls on the ground and hit 35 homers. I expect some regression here, and for his HR/F ratio to move up a bit.
CarGo was Babe Ruth at home (.380-26-76-70) but J.D. Drew on the road (.289-8-41-41). Those numbers might even out a bit, but that massive split makes me nervous. Also, CarGo had a .384 BABIP despite a barely better than league average 20.8 LD-rate. I don’t think he has much of a shot at repeating that batting average.
By Joey on Mar 11, 2011
I’m in a 12 h2h points keeper league. We can keep 2,3, or 4 players. I felt confident with A-Rod, Utley, and Wainwright. But with Wainwright out, and Utley developing vaginitus I’m left wondering who my second should be. Other than Utley my next best options would be Billy Butler or Jay Bruce, or Posey (which I really don’t care for). Thoughts?
By Paul on Mar 12, 2011
There was a study done (can’t find it again) that showed alcoholics are the hardest workers.
Maybe it was right…. Hamilton, Ruth, Miggy.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 12, 2011
Joey-
Horrible luck for sure with wainwright and utley.
Without knowing what happens if you dont keep guys to fill the four slots, I’d have to say guys like Bruce, Butler and Posey are on the edge of being worthy. 12 teams, 4 keepers = 48 guys. Posey and Butler fit there, Bruce not quite. Still, all 3 are young and have bright futures, so you might consider it, especially if you can keep them for a long time.
By Fabricio Quintero on Mar 12, 2011
Hi my friend.
I have a question, do not see why Robinson is above wright?, wright like braun is synonymous of consistency and I think to say he is a player with the potential of 30/30 summarize many things going for it.Last year proved that he can hit well at Citi Field.
By Eric on Mar 12, 2011
well ray to be honest miggy’s drink problem didnt just start and he has been fantasy money this long and he is only 27 will be 28 on 4/18. So if you want to discount him thats fine guys like me will be happy to draft him at the discount. I would be more worried about the hurt full thing that the front office said about Albert Pujols. He took the hi road and didnt react to the comments but i know privately they had to smart a bit.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 12, 2011
Eric-
I understand your position. Could you be right? Absolutely. Could I be right? Sure. It’s just a lot of risk to shoulder in the first round, and I’m just gonna let someone else take it. If he plays 150 games he will be a star… it’s just way more risky a proposition than it was a month ago.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 12, 2011
Fabricio -
I moved Cano up a couple of spots because of the injury to Utley. If you want to take Wright before Cano by all means do. You’ll get no argument from me with that choice.
By Frabj on Mar 12, 2011
Hey Ray,
Never felt so prepared for a fantasy baseball auction thanks to your website and radio show, keep up the great work!
I want to believe your high placement of Mark Reynolds, do you think in a 10 Team Mixed League you can win with him as your starting 3B?
By Frank on Mar 12, 2011
Ray,
Just realized my name was spelled wrong, it’s Frank!
By Ray Flowers on Mar 12, 2011
Frank-
Glad you are ready to rock!
Yeah, I think you can win with Reynolds in that position. You’ll clearly have to get your batting average and steals somewhere else, but the counting numbers figure to be strong.
Remember – Reynolds has averaged 35 homers, 95 RBI and 88 runs the past three years.
By Bobalu on Mar 13, 2011
Ray,
I totally agree with you on bringing Adrian Gonzalez up higher! However, Is there really that far of a drop off from Pujols to Votto to Cabrera?? I just dont see Cabrera outside of the first round this year, if he makes it out if the top 8 picks, i would be surprised. Am I wrong to believe that?
Thanks, I look forward to your response!
Bobalu from Chicago!
By Brad on Mar 13, 2011
I have a possible trade on the table,I would trade Josh Johnson and Jaime Garcia for Chris Carpenter and Josh Beckett.Who do you think is getting the better of the deal?I feel Beckett is due for a bounceback season, but little worried about Beckett and Carpenters health. What do you think?
By Ray Flowers on Mar 13, 2011
Brad-
Beckett coming back off lost season, though I do like his chances of a comeback:
http://baseballguys.com/2011/01/24/is-josh-beckett-finished-3/
Carpenter is always good when he is healthy.
Johnson can be an elite hurler. Garcia, his ERA will likely go up by a run this season, but still solid.
If you are trying to hit homer go for Carp and Beck, though it’s akin to swinging from your heels – you could strike out.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 13, 2011
Bobalu-
Cabrera went from a lock to being a HUGE risk in my mind. He has major issues off the field, and as we’ve seen many times in the past, those demons are hard to outrun. It wouldn’t shock me to have Cabrera win the AL MVP, but after being a lock in my top-6 overall all spring, the latest off the field stuff makes me nervous. At this point, I’m inclined to let someone else deal with the risk.
By Frank on Mar 14, 2011
Hey Ray,
I was high on Beckham at 2B until I read your capsules when you said Beckham was never a great prospect and I noticed he was in the minors for such a short time it’s hard to predict what he will do. I am looking at Beckham, Walker, Zobrist and Sean Rodriguez as 2B that can come cheap but produce solid numbers. Any insight on these guys as well as a good approach towards this position in a ten team mixed league would be greatly appreciated!
By Ray Flowers on Mar 14, 2011
Frank-
I NEVER said anywhere that Beckham was not a great prospect. Here is what the capsule says “Gordon Beckham: A tale of two halves. Gordon hit .216 with three homers in the first half and .310 with six homers in the second. Beckham does own a great opposite field stroke, but he has also been prone to long stretches of ineffectiveness. Moreover, the majority of his career rates suggest solid but not elite level skills, so be careful to avoid a bidding war on draft day.”
Here’s how I would rank the second sackers: Zobrist, Beckham, Walker, Rordreiguez.
By Chris on Mar 14, 2011
Ray, do you have any plans to update this list as the season draws closer?
Thanks
By Frank on Mar 14, 2011
Thanks for refreshing my memory on that one, “solid but not elite skill levels” was what I should have said!
By Ray Flowers on Mar 14, 2011
I won’t be editing it much. If a guy like Bailey blows his arm out yes, but I’m not going to be doing daily updates to the list.
By Brad on Mar 16, 2011
I have Ryan Zimmerman and Adrian Beltre, with Zimmerman having groin issues should I know keep Beltre instead.I know 3rd base goes bad after the top guys.My draft is on Sunday.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 16, 2011
Keep Zimmerman. He is younger, has a higher ceiling, and quit frankly, is a vastly superior hitter. Beltre is solid, Zimmeman is elite.
By John on Mar 16, 2011
hey Ray-
long time listener from blogtalk days, and enjoy very much your takes on players and on strategy. trying to get all the info I can before draft days, I search the best sites(my opinion) and yours is a daily read-all sites seem to have A Ethier as an early 4th rd pick, over players like H Pence, BJ Upton, Ichiro, J Werth, Jay Bruce, S Victorino and J Bautista-what is it about this guy that you(and thee others) see that I am missing-he seems middle of the pack to me, not just this year but the last couple also-thanks and keep up all the hard work you are doing for all us fantasy addicts
By Ray Flowers on Mar 16, 2011
John-
sounds like you’ve been in it for the long haul, thanks for that.
My top-300 http://baseballguys.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Top-300-2011-BBGuys4.pdf has Ethier one spot ahead of Pence, and three ahead of B.J. Upton – all really close. The thing Ethier has is a beautiful swing, and solid plate discipline. He’s also got .300-30-100 on the horizon, something neither Pence nor Upton has a shot at. Plus, in the first half last year before he was injured Ethier was hitting .324-14-54 with a .932 OPS in just 70 games. The other two guys steal bases which certainly boosts their value, but Ethier just has a little more to given in his overall work at the dish, though again, I have them all right next to each other in my rankings so there isn’t much difference in value in my mind.
By Eric on Mar 18, 2011
Is Luke Hughes for real this year. 5 HRs in Sping. does he makes Twins and have a spot on fantasy rosters?
By Ray Flowers on Mar 18, 2011
Hughes is likely to be nothing more than a utility player in his career. He’s coming off that groin issue that limited him last season, and he hasn’t had much success in the upper minors. He has some power and can play a couple of positions, but he’ll likely never be anything other than a depth option in league specific setups.
By Eric on Mar 18, 2011
why so high on Span this year? i see you have him ranked in the 70s?
By Ray Flowers on Mar 19, 2011
Span is a solid all around player. Some thoughts from the free player capsules.
“Denard Span
Span knows how to get on base, despite last seasons drop in OBP, and he is one of just four players in baseball who have stolen 20 bases while scoring 85 times each of the past two years. Given that Span basically matched his career line drive, ground ball and fly ball rates in ’10, the smart money is on a batting average rebound when his BABIP normalizes.”
By Eric on Mar 19, 2011
Thanks! Have to target him. Did a Mock last night and tried a top heavt strategy. Not sure I liked the way it tuened out as I was left with 9 dollats and 9 spots to fill in end and say a lot of guys go for value that o couldn’t bid on. Thoughts?

I dont like bidding on dollars players if possible. I try to leave enough to spend $2 on each guy so I have some roster control.
I dont know how many teams were in this draft, but obviously you drafted with some dull brained people. Any time you get Longoria, Hanley, Braun, Cruz, Upton, Choo — your league mates missed the boat completely.
By Eric on Mar 19, 2011
that is why i asked Kay how much stock we should put into Mocks. I have doubts i would be able to replicate this in my live draft, but if I did, do you see a top 3 finish?
By Ray Flowers on Mar 19, 2011
Its a great squad.Kuroda, Lilly, Niese all undervalued. Light on Saves, but you could go heavy there in FAAB.

By Phil on Mar 19, 2011
Ray,
I’m a loyal listener on Sirus XM and I have used your top 300 list in several mock drafts to warm up for the real thing. It has served me well. I was just curious about how you went about ranking Denard Span and Howie Kendrick at their spots.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 19, 2011
Second guy today that wondered about Span… maybe I’m wrong… nah. j/k
Span- from the player capsules – “is one of just four players in baseball who have stolen 20 bases while scoring 85 times each of the past two years. Given that Span basically matched his career line drive, ground ball and fly ball rates in ’10, the smart money is on a batting average rebound when his BABIP normalizes.”
Basically I look at him as a stable player who should give you a 5×5 effort something close to his average the past two years: .287-6-63-91-25.
IF Mauer and Morneau are healthy, he could easily score 100 runs, and I wouldn’t be shocked at 30 SBs either.
Kendrick is one of a handful of 2B who could hit .300 with 10 homers and 10 steals. Even in a somewhat down 2010 he still —
Had a better batting average than Chase Utley.
Had more homers than Ian Kinsler (injury induced of course).
Had more RBI than Zobrist, Kelly Johnson, Martin Prado, Brandon Phillips etc.
Had more runs than Juan Uribe and Chone Figgins.
Had more steals than K Johnson, Utley, brian Roberts, Weeks etc.
And to me, that was as poorly as Kendrick will perform if he plays 150 games.
By Evan on Mar 20, 2011

Tremendous top-3, then nice up the middle duo. Love Span late as your 5th OF.
No “big” names in SPs, but I really like the arms you got, good job there.
Nice arms out of pen as well. Think you did a strong job with the club. Pretty darn good job.
By Phil on Mar 20, 2011
Ray,
Thanks for the explanation. I’m definitely targeting Kendrick as an undervalued 2B I can grab in later rounds now. I’m still a little dubious on Span being quite that high compared to some of the other light hitting speedster OF but your assessment is solid. I’m probably splitting hairs because he’s defintely undervalued in most rankings. I’m feeling good about your advice helping me get back to 1st after a three year absence. Many thanks.
By Greg on Mar 21, 2011
Ray,
I had the second pick in a 12 team points league. My top 3 were Hanley, Wright, and Pedroia. I thought I could still grab a good 1b by the time my fourth pick got to me but there was a run and the best available at that pick was Konerko and I couldn’t see using a 4th round pick, as I got Nelson Cruz instead. I ended up with Adam Lind in round 11. What are your thoughts on Lind and should I look to make an upgrade as several teams have a 1B at utility.
By Ray Flowers on Mar 21, 2011
Like the first four picks.
Lind will rebound, but not likely to repeat 2009 effort completely.
Split the difference the last two years, likely pretty close to what you will get.
In a 12 team league he isn’t a great option as a UT, but he’s not awful.

This is my first season in fantasy baseball. I am getting in the ground floor of an 8-team dynasty league. Jim-
Glad you enjoy the show and my work.
Tough to break down a team in just an 8-team league. I’m so used to 12 and 15′s that any 8-teamer is gonna look really sound.
Can’t see anything wrong with your club. I think I would have taken a shot late at someone other than boring Cuddyer, but other than that, hitters look good.
By Ed on Mar 23, 2011
Ray – hope all is well. Picked up Encarnarcion off of waivers with the hope of moving Pedro Alvarez to a mgr that need 3B help. We are talking Max Scherzer straight up for Alavarez. Hate trading a bat for an arm bit I do like Scherzer. Thoughts on that trade?
By David on Mar 23, 2011
Ray,
What are your thoughts on Mike Morse of Washington. Is he viable as a 5th OF or CI? Or better to have on the bench with a wait-and-see approach?
Thanks
David
By Ray Flowers on Mar 23, 2011
In a deep mixed league, for sure. Morse is likely to hit 25 homers with a full season of at bats. I’d think Ryan Ludwick-like if I was looking for a rouhg comparison.
By Jeremy on Mar 26, 2011
Ray, love the show and the site.
Question: I’ve been offered a post-draft trade in my keeper league. My keepers are Latos (lose a 21st rd pick), Kershaw (7th rounder) and Jimenez (5th rounder) of Josh Hamilton for Ubaldo Jimenez.
Do I roll with my 3 SPs and load up on bats with my 3rd, 10th, and 14th picks, then hope for some solid 3rd level SPs later? Or do I trade my top SP for a top OF and hope to land either Lester or Verlander with the 10th pick?
By Jeremy on Mar 26, 2011

By Ray Flowers on Mar 26, 2011
Jeremy-
Thanks buddy.
Not clear on your question. You’re saying offer is Jimenez for Hamilton, right? Jimenez is in 5th round, what about Hamilton?
I’ll tell you this… if you are only keeping three guys there is no reason at all to keep two pitchers and then take another one with your first pick to give you 3 of your first 4 guys as pitchers.
By Jeremy on Mar 26, 2011
Sorry I wasn’t clear enough. I was trying to keep it short for ya.
I’m keeping Jimenez, Kershaw, and Latos. The other MGR wants me to trade him UJ for Hamilton but only after the draft, so I will still lose a 5th round pick for UJ (he will lose a 9th Rd pick for Hamilton this year). Since several of the other players being kept were taken in the 1st and 2nd round last year, those managers who took them will lose those picks this year. So essentially I will have a 1st rd pick (#3 overall), a 2nd rd (#10) and a 3rd rd pick (#14) this year. If I keep UJ, then I lose my 5th round pick for him. But if I make the trade, then I will be getting Hamilton in the 5th instead. Out of the 30 keepers, 15 were SPs and 15 were batters, leaving quite a void of quality SPs.
So my question is do I pull the trigger and grab Hamilton? I could still get Braun/Cabrera/Gonzalez/Crawford (best non-keepers) with my 3rd pick, then Lester/Verlander with my 10th.
Hope this isn’t too confusing. Thanks for any help!
By Jeff - NNJ on Mar 26, 2011
Ray, I took waiting on pitching to an extreme (12 team 5×5), taking Greinke in the 8th and then waiting until 15 to get Nolasco. I like the staff that I put together, though, with Greinke, Nolasco, W. Rodriguez, Matusz, Burnett, Floyd, Stauffer, Bedard (I’ll generally start 5, rotating for double starts). Does it look ok, or do I have my blinders on?
By Joel on Mar 26, 2011
I have the 8th pick in a 12 team h2h. If I want an OF and Braun is gone, I have to choose between Cargo and Crawford. cargo has 3 OF position eligibility, which is super attractive in my LF CF RF league. On your show last week, Kyle said this triple elig. would lead him to take cargo over even Braun. However, how much should I worry about Cargo’s home/road splits in a H2h league? How much is Cargo devalued in that format as opposed to roto?
By Ray Flowers on Mar 26, 2011
Jeff- Bedard is a risk, as you know, but other than that, pretty good looking group for having waited. I think you did a nice job putting together some upside, and stable arms. If bedard stays healthy…
By Ray Flowers on Mar 26, 2011
Joel-
I wouldn’t draft CarGo if I was going to sit him on the road. However, that’s also why I wouldnt take him in the first round.
Are you really going to sit him on the road even if the numbers tell you it might make sense? Would be tough to do that with your top pick.
Position flexibility, at 3 spots, is huge. Some guys have two, most dont have three. I still prefer Crawford, but I can completely understand why, in this instance, that CarGo makes a lot of sense.
By Marc on Mar 27, 2011
Ray,
Been listening to your strategies on the show as well as Baseball Guys. I called in a couple of weeks ago asking about drafting in a holds league. I decided to punt saves and focus on the superior setup guys’ peripherals. Here is my draft from Friday night in a 12-team 6×6 mixed money league.
1. (5) Miguel Cabrera
2. (20) Alex Rodriguez
3. (29) Dustin Pedroia
4. (44) Victor Martinez
5. (53) Drew Stubbs
6. (68) Jacoby Ellsbury
7. (77) Mike Stanton
8. (92) Max Scherzer
9. (101) Jason Bay
10.(116) John Danks
11.(125) Colby Lewis
12.(140) Jonathan Sanchez
13.(149) Starlin Castro
14.(164) Ricky Nolasco
15.(173) Jose Tabata
16.(188) Sergio Romo
17.(197) Hong-Chih Kuo
18.(212) Ryan Madson
19.(221) Ike Davis
20.(236) Juan Uribe
21.(245) Andres Torres
There was a monster run on the elite SPs early but after the smoked cleared I’m really stoked for my pitching staff. Long story short, just wanted to say thanks for what you do for us fantasy baseball nerds.

Taking top-6 picks as SP just dumb. Don’t worry about that guy.

OK know there will b run on closers.Do I take 1 solid closer in say 5th round just as not to totally punt category then pick up solid middle relievers in late rounds to boost k/bb rate? The 6pitcher guy in this draft too.LoL Thanks for the help Ray will b sure to bring Your pitching capsule to draft. My 6th year in this league never finished above 5th,pitching always brings me down.

OK — Decision time: if you had Stauffer in a H2H league, would you start him or bench him today?
