Around the Horn: June 8, 2011

June 8th, 2011 | by Ray Flowers |

(1) Jake Peavy to DL with groin issue.

(2) Adam Dunn to get a few days off as did Alex Rios in an attempt to wake both up.

(3) Knees bothering Jimmy Rollins and Mark Teixeira.

(4) Carl Pavano pitching well of late, really.

(5) Justin Masterson has no wins in eight starts despite pitching well.

(5) Jason Heyward called out by Chipper Jones.

    Ray,

I have Heyward. The person who has Kubel wants him. What size advantage do I have to get in return to make a deal? Is Heyward, Carlos Gonzalez too much for Kubel and Tulowitzki (poistions don’t matter for me, just do I get the better 2 combined hitters?)

Also, why is Carlos Gonzalez leading off for the Rockies? Thoughts?

By the way, the Drive is the best show on Sirius radio. Keep it up my man.

Wesley – Dempster I actually like more than Jurrjens who has been pitching out of his mind. I also like Rios more than Morse, but with each passing day the gap between the two shrinks. At this point, to be honest, it would likely be safer to own Morse. If it was me I’d take Dempster/Rios, but this is clearly one of those deals that has a 5 percent chance of blowing up in your face. Some help eh?

Ricky S- Kubel is solid, but he has his limits in the real game, and obviously in fantasy as well. However, Heyward is a mystery right now. If I could get Tulo in the deal I’d do it.

Why is CarGo leading off? Because Folwer is on the DL and CarGo has speed. Of course, I think it should be EYJ, but that’s just me. CarGo actually has 310 career at-bats out of the leadoff spot.

Thanks for the props too. Glad to hear the show is reaching the people!

Mike Aviles – really like him but his regression lately is hurting me. Assuming Betemit is moved, Mous comes up, and Getz holds down 2B, should I consider cutting his multi-positional eligibility for possibly Chris Johnson, Ian Stewart, or Matt Dominguez? My other 3B is Freese so I’m willing to tank a few weeks at 3B if it helps me in playoffs/long-term this year. Thanks again Ray

    Ray,

Bad luck for me again. I woke up to find Pedroia may be out 4-6 weeks. I can slot Aaron Hill into the MI spot, but should I look to pick up Dustin Ackley now? Will he be as good or better in your opinion than Hill can be?

    Hi Ray,

    We’re a 10 team, mixed, H2H points league.

I’m in need of a 2B/SS (have Pedroia, any update on him?) and I want to trade to get either Weeks or Asdrubal. I’d like to offer a pitcher (the managers of these guys are both in dire need of pitching help) in a one-fer-one deal but I need your help in determining what would be a fair and balanced offer. I have Hamels and Gallardo that I don’t want to offer but I also have:

Cahill, Scherzer, Nolasco, Gio, Kennedy, Wandy – and Putz, Axford, Hanrahan, Storen.

I’d like to do a Weeks for Cahill trade but that just seems too unbalanced…but would Asdrubal for Cahill be better?

I have and could add Aaron Hill to the mix to balance out the Weeks deal. I wouldn’t think I’d have to add him to get Asdrubal, or might I?

Which pitcher would you try to give in a straight up trade to receive Asdrubats or Weeks?

    Thanks!

Jimbo – Chris Johnson is replacement level. Ian Stewart has no spot in the bigs. Dominguez potential, but little production at this point. I don’t think any of those guys adds much to your team. Aviles is a .300 hitter, so I’m not sure what happened to him this year. There is no way that his BABIP is gonna be .223 all year. I’d keep him.

Ricky S – All your answers are here —
    http://baseballguys.com/2011/05/30/rotw-rankings-hitters/ for my 2B ranks.

For my thoughts on Ackley – http://baseballguys.com/2011/06/01/the-prospect-trinity/

Rob – Still waiting doctor results on Pedroia.

Asdrubal isn’t going to keep this up. I’d target Weeks if I was gonna go after either of those.

If you could get either guy for Cahill, do it. He’s the best one to deal out of your group of hurlers. No K potential compared to others, and his ratios are likely to go up.

Ouch. Mike Aviles fell fast. Timely question, it was, as a fantasy-version of Yoda would say. I might have to take my chances with Ian Stewart considering my options. I think his new approach at the plate will at least net him a July/September call up. I’m banking on his upside over Chris Johnson. Third times the charm or he may get traded for injury replacement. It’s gut feeling/instinct time in a twenty team league. Thanks again man! I respect your advice more than you know.

  12. By Ray Flowers on Jun 9, 2011

Jimbo – I don’t think the Royals have any idea what they are doing to be honest. Aviles has struggled of late, and maybe a demotion makes sense for him to get his swing back, but after saying they weren’t going to rush their guys they called up Hosmer early, and now are jumping Moustakas into the mix. It’s not that either guy shouldn’t be in the bigs right now, it’s just that the club seems to chance their mind every month on what the plan is.

If I was picking up someone, I’d take Johnson. Stewart certainly has more talent, no doubt at all, but at the same time Stewart may/may be in the bigs any time soon.

I am looking to add one or two of the following Saturday starters in attempt to steal the Wins category in my head-to-head league. Who are the most likely winners of this group? Extra Ks wouldn’t hurt either.

Hammel, McDonald, Dickey, Minor, or Lyles?

Also do you get along with Scott Engle and his crew? Are the imitations in good fun or is he a __________________.

  14. By Ray Flowers on Jun 10, 2011

Mike – There is no way anyone can predict wins. Just can’t do it. I never, ever, tell someone to pitch a guy because he will win. Go with pitchers based on skills, current work, and matchup. Dickey, Minor.

The imitations are in good fun from the morning crew. I know Scott, he’s a really good guy.
