Around the Horn: June30, 2011

June 30th, 2011 | by Ray Flowers |

(1) Mark Ellis now a Rockie. How does that effect NL-only leagues?

(2) Ty Wigginton on fire for the Rockies.

(3) Josh Johnson shoulder update.

(4) Derek Jeter hopes to return Monday from calf injury.

(5) Erik Bedard to DL, Rich Harden off it.

(6) Chris Davis to get shot with Rangers?

PS – Congratulations to Crissy who won the DraftStreet.com competition last night.

Give Bautista and Heyward Get Kemp and Hosmer. Long term keeper league. Standard 5 Cats with Onbase and Slugging %’s

Chad – Give Bautista and Heyward Get Kemp and Hosmer. Long term keeper league. Standard 5 Cats with Onbase and Slugging %’s

Since you didn’t mention contract length, I’m going to assume it’s for as long as you want.

Kemp is the best fantasy player in the group. However, when you add in OBP and SLG, he takes a back seat to Bautista who also qualifies at 3B I’d assume, another point in his favor.

As much as I like Hosmer, he plays 1B. There are just so many elite level 1Bs that I don’t think he has a realistic shot of being a top-10 guy there for a few years. I’d rather have Heyward. Sure he plays the outfield which is deep, but he could easily be a top-30 OF (if 3 OFs start per team, that makes him a daily starter. If five OFs start— you get the point). Plus, Heyward figures to also handily outperform Hosmer in OBP.

    Keep Bautista and Kemp.

Would you accept McCutcheon and Morse for Felix Hernandez?

    Thanks.

  4. By Ray Flowers on Jul 1, 2011

Nick – Morse has been a top-10 1B the last 45 days. I don’t know if he holds on to all of that, but with his OF elig also, he is mighty valuable. McCutchen is a fantasy star doing a little bit of everything. And he has great hair.

I love the potential of King Felix, but if you need offense, this deal is a nice one for you to say yes to.

    Ray,

12 team 4×4. Would you trade Angel Pagan and Wandy Rodriguez to get Johnny Damon and Cole Hamels? No bench spots.

    Thanks

Ray – been watching Chris Davis tear up AAA as well. I’m in a deep, non- keeper, 14 team mixed, H2H league…. 30 man rosters so wire is thin.

    Few questions:

    1) do you think he gets called up for regular playing time or just to provide another bench bat in 2nd half?

    2) David Murphy has done little to nothing at all in 200 abs, so curious to hear if you think Davis slides in for him in OF, since he’s been moved away from the CI?

    3) what #s do you project for him in 2nd half if he gets 200-250 abs?

Obviously, I’m thinking about a move to snag him. I’d play him in UTIL slot, so position doesn’t matter. I also have LaPorta and Moustakas there, so interested to hear if you like him better than either of them in a 6×6 (ops) going forward?

    Thx

    Ray,

Have Ubaldo but don’t trust him and thinking of dropping him for S. Baker. Part of my consideration in the decision is the schedules for MIN and COL the ROTW. While baker pitches in the AL if looks lika a majority of MIN remaining schedule will be vs. the AL Central while COL has a lot of home games remaining (not good for Ubalso) and do face the NL East. In your opinion does MIN remaining schedule favor Baker over Ubaldo? Thanks.

Ray, I was offered Pujols\Dan Hudson for Howard. I think dude is desperate to move Pujols for some reason. I think there is good value in this deal for me. I can bridge the gap at 1B with Dunn or C Lee. Your thoughts?

  9. By Ray Flowers on Jul 1, 2011

Ricky S – Hamels hand seems OK, so I don’t worry about that. He’s also a better option than Wandy, though it’s not a huge gap.
Damon is boring/stable. Pagan may not match the production, but he does have more upside, especially with his wheels.

Fair deal here. I’d take Hamels/Damon.

Ray, would you consider any of the following SPs – Myers, Karstens, Capuano, Worley or Cobb – an upgrade over any of Chacin, Jimenez, Bedard, D. Hudson, Liriano, Ogando or Luebke?

  11. By Ray Flowers on Jul 1, 2011

El Burro – Re: Chris Davis, if you watched the video you know my thoughts on him. Honestly, and I don’t mean to offend here, but questions #1 and #2 were answered directly in the video. As for #3, I don’t like giving # projections. If he does get 250 ABs, .250-15-40, something like that.

  12. By Ray Flowers on Jul 1, 2011

Fenz – The simply answer is no. None of those arms you mentioned on waivers are any better than what you got. The only move could be Luebke for Myers since we don’t know if Luebke will remain in the Padres’ rotation once Harang is healthy.

Ray, In a keeper format, but trying to win this year (tied for 1st), would you rather have Cahill or Romero on the mound. Cahill seems stronger long term, but what do you expect rest of season for both?? Need wins and K’s

  14. By Ray Flowers on Jul 1, 2011

Dave – please tell me you didn’t just ask if I’d rather have Cahill or Romero …

If you have read anything I’ve ever written, or ever listened to me on the radio, you would know that I’m not a fan of Cahill. To objectively analyze him, I’d still say this.

I’d be surprised if he has a better ERA than Romero.
I’d be exceedingly surprised if he had a better WHIP than Romero.
I’d fall over and have a fit on the floor if he had more Ks than Romero.

It’s Romero ROTW, and in a keeper league, over Cahill – and it’s not even close.
