Around the Horn: August26, 2011
August 26th, 2011 | by Ray Flowers |(1) Giants/Padres deal for Heath Bell doesn’t materialize. Giants left with wounded Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo.
(2) Johan Santana likely done for year (possibly Jonathan Niese as well). Jose Reyes hopefully back next week.
(3) Indians place Josh Tomlin/Michael Brantley on DL. Shin-Soo Choo hurt. Jim Thome now an Indian.
(4) Curtis Granderson having a historic season for the Yankees.
(5) Travis Snider wrist injury ends his season.

Ray, it’s crunch time for me vying for first in my division (three-division, 12-team points league, 27-man rosters, five keepers for up to two years) and I can use the oster spot I’ve reserved for Matt Moore ever since the late July/early August speculation that he’d be brought up to work out of the bullpen. There’s been virtually nothing on him since, although I see that he is still dominating at AAA. I’m planning on keeping Pedroia, Reyes, Grienke, Lawrie and one of C. Santana/Avila/D. Jennings for 2012, so Moore is likely out of the picture as a keeper for me. I’d love to get a full September from him out of Tampa’s bullpen but it doesn’t look likely. Dump him for a Romo or Arodyis Vizcaino?

Fenz – Even if Moore is called up and pitches out of the pen in September, he’s of no use to you in a a mixed league. What, he get’s 10-12 innings? I just don’t see how that would help you out at this point of the year. Romo should be back on Sunday, and he could get a few save chances until Wilson returns which doesn’t look like it will happen until early September.

Hey Ray, 5×5 standard roto with 5 keepers
Have been offered Jose Reyes for the 13th pick in next years draft. I have the #2 and 21st picks also so the pick drought won’t be too long. I already have Tulo at SS and Reyes would take my DH slot.
My current thoughts on keepers are Tulo,Adrian Gonzalez,Zimmerman(3b),Nelson Cruz, and Jered Weaver. Was thinking I would drop Weaver if I was to make this deal. It’s a ten team league.
Your thoughts???
thanks

jb (Not JB) – If youre league is just 10 teams, you really should be using middle infielders. Doesn’t sound like you do though.
If you already have Tulo… Obviously Reyes is an elite talent who would fit well into your UT spot, so there is NO issue adding him to do that. You’ll also be hosing one of your leaguemates since you’ll have two of the top-10 SS.
If teams protect 5 players, that’s 50 guys. 13th pick = 63rd player. No reason at all not to deal that pick to get Reyes.
If it was me, I’d let Zimmerman go and hold on to Weaver. Worst case, you have a great trading chip.

Ray,
Football question!! Our league had 12 teams and this year we have 10. We start 1qb 2rb 3wr 1te 1k 1def plus a bonus player(anyone including qb,k,d). So starting a qb there, to me, is a no brainer. I mentioned adding to the starting rosters because we dropped to 10 teams. Maybe starting 2 qbs 3 rbs and add a flex or two. I do my research and hate to be in a shallow league where luck takes over even more. Doesnt sound like he wants to budge. Considering putting my money somewhere else! Do you have any suggestions for me to do in this league? Is there something i should mention or suggest to the commissioner? Or should i just bail?
Thanks
Brian

Brian – Sad to see you leave a league you’ve been in for a while, those are always the most fun vs. those ones you play on the internet against People you’ve never seen before.
I agree, a 10 team lg is pretty shallow, so adding starters makes sense.
I’d say you should add a second QB, just like baseball uses two starting catchers. I’d move the flex play to only WR.RB.TE. You’re right though. If league lets you use QB as flex, that’s probably the best way to go.
You could also add a second starting tight end.
If none of that works, could also make things more interesting by limiting benches to a couple of guys – maybe three? That way there will be a lot of movement in waivers.

Ray, NL only league: two questions- 1) Is Cishek the closer in Florida YET?? I picked him up a few days ago; 2) I am currently starting Bourgeois at 2nd base (I have no other 2nd baseman on my roster) but it looks like he isn’t getting much playing time these days even with that AA ballclub in Houston. Would you waive him to pick up someone who plays everyday and is currently on our waiver wire like Josh Harrison (qualifies at 2nd base), Mark Ellis or Ryan Theriot? I am close to picking up 2 more points in steals but even if I waive Bourgeois I would still have Gordon, Braun, Hanley (coming off DL), Hart, A. Torres and J. Shaefer on my active roster. FYI- I can also gain another point in both RBI and Runs. Thanks.

Could you rank these for the ROTS?
Hosmer, Bourjos, J.D. Martinez, Matsui, Carp, Constanza
Thanks

Ryan – It’s still a mixed bag in FLA. Nunez has looked awful the last couple of weeks, but the team is still not officially moved on yet. Cishek is in teh mix for sure,. a nice add in NL only lg. Mujica is still lurking though.
Bourj. is a solid play for speed, but that’s his only skill. The other guys you listed are solid, but not great. Torres return helps in the steals column, if he can stay healthy of course.
Judge your answer based upon how you can move up. JB will steal bases, but that’s about it. Ellis is hitting .299 in August, but it’s been pretty hallow (seven runs, one steal, four RBI).

NICK – here are my thoughts on the guys ROTW.
Constanza has seen his best days. He’s not a very good hitter.
Carp is a power bat, bit hitting .300 not in the cards.
JDM – awful team, no way in hell he can keep up his 27% line drive rate.
Bourjos – Best all around option.
Hosmer – best if power is goal.
Matsui – amazingly hot for like a month, rest of season below average.
Bourj, Hosmer, Carp.

Thanks so much as always… if it’s not too much to ask, where does Logan Morrison fit on that list.
Much appreciated as I head to the playoffs.

Nick – LoMo has solid pop, and he is producing a lot of tune (31 RBI in 39 games). However, he has hit .213 over his last 66 games. Yikes is right. I wouldn’t put him any higher than 4th on your list.
