Around the Horn: May30, 2012

May 30th, 2012 | by Ray Flowers |

(1) Andre Ethier making big push for his payday this offseason.

(2) Roy Halladay out for 6-8 weeks with shoulder injury. Is he done being an elite arm?

(3) Jered Weaver placed on DL with back issue. Believed to be minor.

(4) Roy Oswalt signs with Rangers, about four weeks away.

(5) Jonathan Sanchez still working his way back from biceps issue.

(7) Brandon McCarthy good to go Saturday for A’s.

(8) Injured outfielders close to returning -  Yoenis Cespedes, Cameron Maybin, Michael Morse, Desmond Jennings and Nick Markakis.

alright Ray I hve a chance at Alex Gordon on waivers in my league…I’m already last in Steals and will eat them again this year. Going for a Three-Peat ad am currently in first place in a 7×7…I would say the two drop candidates would be Maybin or Fowler if I decided to go for Alex Gorden?? Input please? I’m first in 6 catergories and 2nd in 3 others…

Trade Heyward for Panda? Keeper league can keep forever. 6×6 with OPS

Right now my keepers are Bruan, Hosmer, Harper, Lawrie, McCutchen, Tulo, and J Upton and my last spot would be Heyward or Panda

Polka – At this point, you have to keep Fowler. I’d have a hard time saying it’s best to drop Maybin, but if you wanted to in order to add Gordon, since you say you are throwing in the towel on steals, then add Gordon who has gotten a little boost since he was put back in the leadoff spot.

Josh – Panda is taking BP and fielding, and he’s coming along nicely. Should be back in actin soon. Here’s my issue. You have Hosmer at first and Lawrie at 3B. Do you have a CI in this league? If not, I dont love the idea of Panda at UT, though of course his production for that spot is totally fine.

I’d still side with Heyward here for potential, but given how he has underperformed for the past two years, I’d understand going with Panda though concerns about injury, and weight, should be factored in.

Is Dexter Fowler a must own in all leagues? Thanks.

    Hey Ray,
Been offered Cain, Lester and Bruce for my Wainwright, Beltran and Hosmer. My 1B would consist of a platoon between Swisher, Morneau and Michael Young. I could use the pitching. Think it’s enough? Seems to come down to which is more likely to break the slump: Lester or Hosmer.

    Thanks!

Nick – Folwer has been a must own ALL year, just like I said before the season began. His pace, since July of last year, equate to a 20/20 season with 120 runs and .900 OPS over 162 games.

    Hey Ray,

I’m in a 5×5 roto league and looking to upgrade my offense. I got a trade pending of Papi and Fuentes for Cueto and Hanrahan.

My remaining closers would be Brett Myers, Casey Jannsen, Alfredo Aceves and then Fuentes.

I’d take no hit in regards to my SP’s so losing Cueto is no worry.

My offense would now look like Matt Holliday, Beltran, Papi, Pedroia, Pence, Freeze, Michael Young, Avilles and A.J. Ellis.

Should I make the move to upgrade the offense with Papi or will this damage my closers to much by losing Hanrahan?

    Thank you!

Andy – looking to upgrade my offense. I got a trade pending of Papi and Fuentes for Cueto and Hanrahan

Fuentes is in a tenuous position in 9th. May not be able to hold onto the role. Janssen likely to lose role when Santos is healthy. That leaves you with Myers – who could be dealt and end up as a setup man – and Aceves who will lose his job in the 2nd half if Bailey is healthy. LOTS of IF’s here, but this could become an area of real weakness pretty easy if you deal Hanrahan.

Can you just do Papi for Cueto?

  10. By Andy on May 31, 2012

    Ray-

WOW…that is a lot of IFs. In a month or so, I could find myself looking for saves.

My initial offer was Papi for Cueto but that was denied. The guy I’m dealing with has closer issues, so I think he wanted someone who was locked into the 9th inning role.

Man I’m glad I checked in with you before pulling the trigger on this deal.

Thanks again for all your help Ray. Keep up the good work!

    - Andy
