Around the Horn: June26, 2012

June 26th, 2012 | by Ray Flowers |

(1) Anthony Rizzo called up by Cubs. Will he kill it from the start?

(2) Trevor Bauer called up by D’backs. An ace in the making?

(3) Kevin Youkilis dealt to White Sox. Can he put it back together?

(4) Chase Utley nearing return. Should you be excited?

(5) Everth Cabrera – speed demon worth a look

(6) John Buck – a power source?

I have held Rizzo for awhile and am getting a few trade offers for him. I need SP and have been offered Vogelsong or Daniel Hudson. Are these offers settling or should I jump?

Josh – As you saw in the video I’m not sold on Rizzo, but I’d think you could do better than Vogelsong and Hudson. There has to be someone in your league who would pay more. I don’t think the offers are terrible, but I’d aim a bit higher.

Hey Ray – on the subject of Youk whom you mention above: do you think Reynolds/I. Kennedy is a good enough return to send Youkilis? I’m inclined to at least give Youk to the ASB to see how he adjusts to his new surrounds, but even if he’s good I’m not sure the diff b/w them is Kennedy.

Also, my staff is already quite deep (Verlander, Strasburg, Haren, Cliff Lee, Gallardo, Kuroda) and we have a 200 GS limit. I’d probably drop Parnell (who’s my 5th closer) if I made the deal.

10-team Roto w/ OPS, K/9, QS added. How do you view this? many thanks!

Jon – Are you saying you can send Youkilis and get back both Mark Reynolds and Ian Kennedy? You have to do that deal. Pull the trigger.

Ray – It’s actually for Alvarez and Kennedy, but I would drop Alvarez straight away to pickup Reynolds who’s a FA (given that he hasn’t heated up yet). I’m just worried that with my GS limit my staff would be overstuffed. Though Kennedy makes for good Strasburg insurance. Heh.

Nice Vid and love the festive hat.

I definitely agree with the Rizzo and Bauer analysis. Theres no question that Rizzo has some real talent and I understand he failed miserably on his first attempt but the skill is there and hopefully he crosses over successfully this time around.

I absolutely agree with what you said with Bauer, I think walks scare me more than anything else with pitchers, especially rookies, 4-5 walk/game in AAA will translate to over 5 in the show and walks = runs and also equals high pitch counts. I hope he can bring these walks down without messing with his mechanics too much. I’m actually a little more excited about Arizona’s other prospect (Tyler Skaggs).

I think Youk can do good in chicago. Good hitters park, playing with some solid veterans (Dunn and Konerko). I think there will be good comradery there which may help Youk get going. Even though I would not bank on him anymore, I still think he has some left in him to surprise some people.

No faith in Utley, his injury will bother him for the rest of his career and as sad as it is to see a second basemen of his caliber go, I really don’t believe he has any complete seasons left in him.

Joe M – Thanks for the well thought out response. Much appreciated.

Hey Ray , 12 team Roto league. Somebody offered me Curtis granderson and jordan Zimmerman for Trout and Fernando Rodney. I am 6th in saves and 10th in era and k’s . I only have F.Franciso and parnell, But heres the thing i have alot of pieces to move when my guys come off D.L (bucholtz, morrow, dempster, Longoria and C.Crawford) to move for closers or grab em off waivers as they fall. I think its a no brainer but maybe im wrong . Thanks again Ray

Hey Ray, someone in my league dropped Corey hart. He is eligible for OF/1B. At those positions I have a combination of Dunn, Morse, Holliday, Bourn, Cruz, with Cespedes on the bench. Do you think need I to pick up Hart? If so, who would I drop, cespedes? My other bench player is seager, but if I were to drop him I would have nothing but OF players on my bench. Thanks

The Blue Jays’ bats have been raking lately. Do I start Ervin Santana and Garrett Richards this weekend? Does Richards continue pitching after Williams comes back? Also, your thoughts on Mike Minor? Thanks Ray!

Wesley – Curtis granderson and jordan Zimmerman for Trout and Fernando Rodney.

At this point, Trout/Granderson are equal value.
At this point, Rodney more valuable in fantasy.

You’re giving up the better plays right now, but going for the stability the first two bring is totally fine with me.

  12. By Ray Flowers on Jun 27, 2012

Vince – I would think that, even in a lg this shallow, that there is no reason to have Hart on waivers. Cespedes for Hart? You can do that. Hart more stable, at least with health, so I can understand doing that. As you wrote, having only bench OF options not a good idea.

Mike – I don’t start many hurlers in Toronto. There are plenty of whispers that the Jays might be cheating when they play at home, and the offense just kills it there regardless.

I dont know if Richards sticks when Williams comes back either. He is certainly a better option than Williams, but Jerome has had a lot of success.
