Around the Horn: June27, 2012

June 27th, 2012 | by Ray Flowers |

(1) Brandon Morrow (obqliue) – conflicting reports on his health/return date.

(2) CC Sabathia shockingly headed to DL with groin issue.

(3) Daniel Hudson’s elbow barking – tests being run. Patrick Corbin called up.

(4) Aroldis Chapman/Santiago Casilla rebound from recent hiccups.

(5) Ryan Braun’s elbow barking – out of lineup Weds. Hopes to return Friday.

(6) Jed Lowrie’s average going down, but he’s flashing a big time power bat (he’s knocking on top-10 status at the position over at Fleaflicker).

    Ray,

Need a closer in my 9 team NL only keeper (23/260 w/12 man reserve squads). Likely trade targets in terms of availability are Putz at $11 or Bell at $18 but both scare the hell out of me. Are either of the worth giving up anything decent? I just picked up Parnell (thank you sleeping Francisco owner) so I can try to hang with him and Casilla. Sitting in 1st overall but I’m 6th in saves and need 10 net to pick up 3 more points.

Hey Ray – I ‘ve been rotating 5th OFs in my 10-team league and De Aza just hit the wire after his recent slump. Couldn’t find much info about him specifically on the site so I thought I’d ask real quick. He’s worth a high waiver claim to play in my last OF spot, yeah? You like him to more or less do what he’s been doing ROTW? It’s him, Maybin or Belt for me and we count AVG and OPS in addition to the usual. Thanks!

Fish – Maybe a “thanks” or “I appreciate your time” ?

  4. By Ray Flowers on Jun 27, 2012

Greg – As of now, De Aza is a top-30 OF in the fantasy game. Since you’re starting 50 in your lg, think he’s a must add.

As for ROTW… I think I might release some rankings early next week.

For now, I think it’s safe to say he’s a better option than Maybin.

    Hey Ray,
Quick question, I am wondering what you would predict for Hellickson ROS. I need to solidify some pitching and thinking of dropping Trevor Cahill for him. What’s your thoughts? Thanks for the help!

  6. By Ray Flowers on Jun 27, 2012

Chase – I’d rather have Hellickson. He should be off DL as soon as eligible. Neither guy is close to being elite, but Hellickson is a slightly better option than the DBacks hurler.

Busy day in the M.A.S.H Unit, Ray. In addition to the guys you mentioned who are experiencing injury problems, it turns out Pettitte’s ankle is broken from that comebacker (out 6-8 weeks) and Ethier has an oblique issue that made him leave today’s game (no word yet on DL status).

  8. By Tom on Jun 27, 2012

Ray, My team is borderline on having a shot at the money this year. In a 10 team AL only auction keeper. The first place team just lost Pettitte. If I can get either Desmond Jennings or Brett Lawrie for Jared Weaver and Jarrod Dyson who should I push for? Jennings and Lawrie could be kept at $5 next year while Weaver and Dyson are not able to be able to be kept.

From the karma’s a b…. category. Last night Yankee fan helps D Wise fake a catch, and today two pitchers go on the DL.

Thanks a,s a,lways for your adivce. Love the show and truly appreciate how quickly you respond with advice.

would you trade arod peralta and moss for lester and freese?
do you think lester will get better and is this an off year for arod?

Would u deal Cano for Lawrie and Trout ROTW? The guy is hurtin at 2nd and would still have a solid OF. I could slide Aviles into my 2B slot. * or what about Kemp for Trout straight up ROTW considering the injury?
Thanks again for your expertise and love the show as always.

    Dear Ray,

First off, let me say how much I appreciate your time and expertise. I value your opinion highly, and The Drive with you, Kay and Kyle is absolutely my favorite XM radio show. Thank you in advance should you decide to answer the following.

Need a closer in my 9 team NL only keeper (23/260 w/12 man reserve squads). Likely trade targets in terms of availability are Putz at $11 or Bell at $18 but both scare the hell out of me. Good Morning,

12 Team Head to head somehow I am in first. Outfield is Justin Upton, Cody Ross and Alfanso Soriano. Ross will be out soon with Crawrford and Jacoby on way back. Alfonso is what he is Homeruns and no steals. Is it a good time to Deal Utley (Cano at Second currently) with Ryan Howard or Evan Longoria (Aramis at 3rd now) for outfield help.

  13. By Mark on Jun 28, 2012

Ray – Would you pick up Fister or Latos in a 5×5 12 team league until Morrow comes back?

    Thanks!

    Hey Ray –

Top of the morning, during which I’m trying to figure out whether to trade for one of your beloved SF Giants. I’m quite deep at SP (Verlander, Strasburg, Haren, Cliff Lee, Gallardo, Ian Kennedy, Kuroda, Bauer). And I’m currently starting Reynolds at 3B.

Two deals on the table, either:

    My Gallardo for his Sandoval

    My Kennedy for his Aramis

League is 10-team roto and counts OPS, QS and K/9 in addition. Gallardo’s been a QS machine, despite his WHIP issues. And I love Panda normally but his hamate and lack of XBH since returning worry me a bit. We hav a 200 GS limit so I definitely need to shed some pitching. Which if either would you recommend taking – or can’t you be rational about them Giants? Heh. thanks a lot, man. hope life’s treating you well.

Hey Ray, who would you go with the rest of the year: Alexei Ramirez or Dustin Ackley? Thanks!

  16. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Tom – Dyson is no great shakes, and may lose role when Myers comes up, but I would think Weaver would be enough for either youngster. If you can do the 2 for 1, then do it (odd to think someone would give up those young potential stars for 3 months of Weaver though).

    You got it Tom.

  17. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Brad – arod peralta and moss for lester and freese?

Moss is s spare part. Peralta borderline top-12 at SS. That for Lester is OK.
Arod or Freese is a toss up.

Fine to do, plus you get to add another player to even out your roster.

  18. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Luke – deal Cano for Lawrie and Trout ROTW?

Cano is unbelievably good, but yes, I would get the two youngsters if I could.
I’d rather do that than Kemp for Trout.

  19. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Fish – Here are some thoughts of mine…

I’d certainly go for Putz over Bell. Better skills, and cheaper. Actually, Putz is pitching very well the last month – and he still throws a ton of strikes which I like a lot.

Parnell isn’t likely to run away with the job, and Casilla has been a bit wobbly of late.

  20. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Audie – You’re in first — bask in the glory.

You can’t win a league, or at least it would be damn near impossible to, with an OF of Ross/Soriano/JUp if it’s 12 teams and only 3 OFs start. Look to improve.

  21. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Mark – Latos slightly over Fister. A bit more K’s, and it seems like he is slowly coming around where Fister isn’t likely to keep up the overall pace he’s shown since joining the Tigers last year.

  22. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Jon – I’d do the second deal and send Kennedy to get Aramis. Just like last year, Aramis has come on like gangbusters after a slow start. I have some worry about the lack of pop with Panda as well.

  23. By Ray Flowers on Jun 28, 2012

Jeremy – Real toss up to be truthful. I’d side with Ramirez solely because of history, and for the fact that Ackley just hasn’t shown any real improvement this year. Very close though.
