2012 BaseballGuys.com Mid-Season Rankings

July 3rd, 2012 | by Ray Flowers |

Back in late January the BaseballGuys 2012 Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide was offered to facilitate your quest to dominate the fantasy competition. A lot has changed since then though, an awful lot.

Carlos Santana has been a massive disappointment behind the dish.

Albert Pujols struggled mightily out of the gate.

Evan Longoria had multiple setbacks with a lower body injury.

Dustin Pedroia has been largely ineffective due to injury.

Troy Tulowitzki is on the shelf yet again.

Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp suffered significant injuries.

Roy Halladay was hurt.

Two-thirds of the bullpens in baseball have switched closers.

Obviously, a lot has changed since the 2012 season began.

Given those facts, I thought now would be a great time update my Player Rankings. Here’s what I’ve done.

I’ve ranked the top-40 players at the following positions: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B.
I’ve ranked the top-100 outfielders.
I’ve ranked the top-150 starting pitchers.
I’ve ranked the top-75 relievers.

That’s 525 players ranked for the second half of the 2012 baseball season.

How do you get your copy of the5x5, mixed league rankings?

On the right hand side of the BaseballGuys page, near the top, is a YELLOW DONATE tab. Simply click on the tab, donate $1.00 through Paypal, and The Mid-Season Rankings will be on their way to you within hours.

$1 folks – that’s it. That’s like going to iTunes and downloading a song.

It’s just that simple.

Donate to the BaseballGuys.com cause and I’ll send you an email with the PDF file containing the rankings.

There’s still time to win your fantasy baseball league this season, so let BaseballGuys.com help to guide you to that championship.

Keeps my secondary income flowing all year long. I’ve got a sixxer going on at work..Football, Hockey, Baseball, Football, and Hockey and leading Baseball again…season in cycles..But it doesn’t matter what I win, my annoying wife wants to know the costs?

Hey Ray – thanks SO much for the mid-season ranks. Tremendously helpful. Wondering about a little positional comparison here. I’m dropping Alvarez (10-teamer, OPS counts) now that his streak is over and injury is creeping in. Who would you add at this point between Berkman, Ike and Maybin? Seems like Berk is one of the guys who can just roll out of bed and hit, plus I’m a Craig owner so that would give me some insurance. I do have a big ol’ Maybin crush though. I’m tops in AVG/OPS right now and could use both HR and SB counting stats. Got a read here? Thanks!

    Ray:

I just made a trade in my 10-team 6×6 league (mixed).

    I got Napoli and Oswalt.

I gave up Plouffe and Wandy.

How do you evaluate my trade? I had need at catcher which is why I ended up pulling the trigger…

  10. By Ray Flowers on Jul 4, 2012

Greg – Glad you are liking the mid-season rankings. Tell a friend to help out the cause.

Alvarez has hits in 9 of 10 games with 11 RBIs, so I don’t know what you are meaning when you say his streak is over.

Berkman not worth an add in 10 tm until he’s healthy.
Maybin only an add if you need steals.
Ike Davis had an impressive June, but still not much diff than Alvarez.

Go with Davis or Alvarez based on positional need.

Jason - I got Napoli and Oswalt. I gave up Plouffe and Wandy.

I’d rather have Napoli. I’d rather have Wandy. You say you needed the catcher, so I’m OK with this deal even though Oswalt has me a bit nervous right now.

hi, ray. 12 team mixed. weekly head-to-head categories. my RP’s are nathan, casilla and addison reed. they give me an above avg. chance every week in saves category, but i worry a bit about reed and casilla a bit, too. what do you think of swisher for chapman? if i trade swisher, my OF would be beltran, granderson, victorino and zobrist until ellsbury is back. good deal for me? and if i can’t get chapman, what do you think of swisher for ryan cook?

happy b-day america. and a big hello to the higgs boson.

  13. By Ray Flowers on Jul 4, 2012

David – Trading Swisher for Chapman is fine to do. Looks like you only start 3 guys in the OF? If correct, deal is fine to make.

Swisher for Cook is OK, but Cook walks too many guys, and the hits are going to start falling so don’t love this one as much.

    Ray,

Happy 4th. Cant wait to get the rankings. I keep checking the inbox and wait with baited breath.

I have two huge trades in the works and want your opinion. 6×6 mixed roto. obp and k/9 are are extra categories.

Trade #1: Getting Starlin Castro and Anibel Sanchez for CC and Yunel Escobar. I am pretty stocked in pitching so i can afford to deal cc

Trade #2: (and I know you hate big deals but it was offered to me) getting Victorino, halladay, billingsley, chase headley and russell martin for napoli, wainwright and luca duda. I have a hole at 3b and like headley and i need speed so vic helps there also.

    what you think?

    thanks

    Ming

  15. By Ray Flowers on Jul 5, 2012

Ming – Here are my thoughts on your two trades.

#1: Escobar is no great option in OBP lgs. Castro isn’t likely to get any better, and he’s stopped running, but still he’s a .300 hitting SS. Real key is Sanchez rebounding. Deal is solid.

#2: I’d go ahead and do this deal as constructed. However, remember that you have to drop two guys to balance it out. When you do that, does the deal still look like a winner to you? It may not.

  16. By Nate on Jul 5, 2012

    Hey Ray,
Got a quick one for you. 12 team h2h league. Salavdor Perez is on my waiver wire, and i currently have Arencibia. Would that move be an upgrade for me the rest of the way? I have a well rounded team, so I wouldn’t be looking to gain any particular categories. Thanks!

  17. By Ray Flowers on Jul 5, 2012

Nate – Did you purchase my ROTW rankings? If you did, and you aren’t looking to gain in any particular category, it’s easy enough to find the answer you’re looking for – just check out how I ranked them.

  18. By Ming on Jul 5, 2012

Thanks Ray. I made both deals. The second one caused a painful drop (brandon belt) but i am looking to deal some volume and upgrade at a few spots and i now have a plethora of desirable OF’s.

    Ray,

Just made my donation! I’m interested to see your updated rankings. Do you break it out by league type (AL Only, NL Only, Mixed, Roto, H2H)? If not, no worries. I’m sure the info stands up regardless.

I’m intersted in seeing what your thoughts are on ROTY rankings for AL-only outfielders. Specifically, my OFers of Grandy, Reddick, Span, Revere, Damon, and Berry. I’d include Dunn, but he’s most likely grouped with the 1B category.

Thanks for all the time and advice! I’m looking fwd to the email with the updated rankings pdf file.

  20. By Ray Flowers on Jul 5, 2012

Steve – Just like the Preseason Guide, it’s 5×5 mixed league that is addressed. Obviously rankings are still there for other formats too, and should be pretty close.

Hope they help you out amigo.

  21. By Chrissy on Jul 5, 2012

I more than happily donated for your mid-season rankings. Your draft guide, advice on the Sirius XM radio show, your website and Sports Illustrated column has gotten me to where I am today……. 1st place!! I want to add that this is my first year in this league as they added 2 teams. It is a roto-auction league and my first for both of those as well. I went to the draft with Ray’s guide in hand and not knowing what the hell I was doing in terms of the auction. I had a whole roster to fill and the other members got to keep up to 13 players. I made smart draft picks and made some smart trades ….thanks to you Ray! Not so sure the other members will want me back next year! LOL Thanks again!!!!

Ray, Just donated for the mid season update. Thank you for all the advice you have given me throughout the season.

    Ray,

Thanks for the work on the guide. Really like Fantasy Drive on XM 87, too – you shatter a lot of illusions with your analysis.

I take it you don’t see another explosion coming from Uggla similar to last year’s?

I’m wondering if I should try to acquire Kipnis.

  24. By Ray Flowers on Jul 6, 2012

Chrissy – You are rocking it! Keep up the good times rolling in the second half. Hope you show those boys who is boss!

  25. By Ray Flowers on Jul 6, 2012

Tom – You bet my friend. Hope it helps.

  26. By Ray Flowers on Jul 6, 2012

Dean – I do what I can to make it happen Dean… glad it seems to be working for you.

I was just writing about Uggla today. He’s still on pace for 20/80 with nearly 100 runs. He can’t continue to be this bad moving forward, so it shouldn’t take much to get Uggla back on track.

  27. By Tom on Jul 6, 2012

Ray, it’s just like Christmas day… just got home from work, fired up the computer and opened up the 2nd half guide. Thanks. It’s just what I wanted.

I do have a question for you. I’m in a 10 team AL only auction keeper. I am in the middle of the pack and have just been offered a trade from the last place team who is looking to rebuild. I would give up Trout at $5 for next year and get back P. Fielder and M. Cabrera. I don’t know if it will get me to first, but it should get me in the money. I do have Crawford and L. Cain coming back soon. Do I make the deal or keep Trout? Thanks as always for your advice.

    Tom

  28. By Ray Flowers on Jul 7, 2012

Tom – Glad I could deliver that little gift for you.

Can you keep Fielder and Cabrera?

Even if you can’t, that’s a massive return for Trout. I’d say go for it and try and win. Who knows if you’ll even be in that lg next year, right?

  29. By Tom on Jul 7, 2012

Ray, Thanks as always. I could keep Cabrera at $42 and/or Fielder at $37. Just made this deal… I traded Trout, Porcello and a minor league draft pick for Cabrera, Fielder, Elliot Johnson and James Shields.

Have a great weekend. I’ll keep you posted as I hunt down the leader.

    Thanks.

    Tom

I always hate trading the best player in the deal, but do I accept receiving Justin Upton,Austin Jackson and Josh Reddick in exchange for Josh Hamilton?

  31. By Ray Flowers on Jul 7, 2012

Eric – do I accept receiving Justin Upton,Austin Jackson and Josh Reddick in exchange for Josh Hamilton

Who are the 2 guys you have to drop? If they are throw aways, I’d do this deal. Hamilton is always an injury risk, and as great as he has been, over his last 30 games has has hit just .220 with five homers.

  32. By Matt on Jul 9, 2012

Hi Ray–I donated a few days ago using this email address but haven’t received the guide yet. A little help? Thanks for all the hard work man.

Matt – You should have it by now. Check your SPAM folder. If not there, email me a copy of your receipt to fantasyfandom@yahoo.com and I’ll shoot it to you.
