Around the Horn: July25, 2012

July 25th, 2012 | by Ray Flowers |

(1) Hanley Ramirez dealt to Dodgers. Will he live up to expectations?

(2) Ryan Dempster not on way to Braves? Maybe Dodgers? Maybe staying in Chicago?

(3) Zack Greinke on Braves radar?

(4) A-Rod fractures hand, out 6-8 weeks. Chase Headley target?

(5) Cole Hamels signs 6-year, $144 deal with Phillies.

(6) Ryan Roberts to Rays.

(7) Wandy Rodriguez dealt to Pirates (will his ownership rate go up in his new home? See Feaflicker).

(8)  Since All-Star break – Yoenis Cespedes/Carlos Santana on fire.

Ray – 12 team 5×5. Drop Plouffe for Hardy?

    Thanks!

Mark – Plouffe has slowed, and is dealing with injury. Could go to Hardy of course, but the past three wekes Hardy is hitting .123 so he’s been AWFUL. Likely a better option out there for you right now.

Ray – Need to drop Plouffe, Werth, H. Kendrick, or Daniel Murphy to make room for injury help off the waiver wire…thoughts who’s the most expendable ROS? 12-team, 5×5, H2H.

    Thanks!

    Ray
12 team cumulative point league. Having hard time thinking nationals can sit strasburg in pennant race. Your thoughts? Should I attempt to trade him for tier 2 pitcher with more 2Nd half reliability (ie gallardo or shields)? Thoughts on Matt Harrison?
Thank for your insight in advance.

Robert – Shame to wait on Werth this long only to drop him when he’s nearly healthy. Kendrick hitting .275 lats week, still looking for big run. Plouffe is hurt. Murphy only hitting .416 the past month.

I’d prob let Plouffe go, but it might be best to let Kendrick go (I always think Kendrick is capable of being a borderline elite performer, at least for some period of time, cause of his solid all-around game).

Darnell – I’ve written and talked about Strasburg many times. I agree. Can’t see how they would sit him if still in the race. Even if they shut him down at 180 innings, that’s still like 9-10 starts left for him. Since he’s so much elite, hard to move on from him. Certainly wouldn’t with Harrison who doesn’t have the talent to outperform Stras. Shields in a funk, Gallardo often hit or miss in his own right.

Ray – Someone in my league dropped Carlos Santana ($10) – I currently have Logan Morrison ($15) at 1B (Votto on DL) – should I add Santana? Santana seems to be picking it up a bit as of late. It is a 13 team league that uses OBP instead of AVG and one catcher (my catcher is Doumit for $1). Thanks! Matt

Matt – I wrote about Carlos Santana today : http://baseballguys.com/category/mailbag/

At $10 in a keeper lg, and one that uses OBP, I don’t know how you can’t immediately add Santana. Doumit is an even better value at $1, and I wouldn’t suggest letting him go, but you have to have someone on your roster you can kick to the curb for Santana.
