Would you trade Pedro Alvarez and Marte for a slumping Jay Bruce? Thanks

Nick – Cant drop Bruce. If you are over on him, trade him. Can’t just cast him adrift.

How do I get my ERA and WHIP down?? I am 1st in Wins and 2nd in K’s…..but I am 2nd to last in ERA and WHIP. Is it my pitchers?? I have Dickey,Gio,J.Johnson,Scherzer,Peavy,Strasburg,Harvey. They don’t do too bad…but usually have some walks and homeruns given up when winning.Do I need to shake things up and just switch the whole staff to pitchers they are extremely hot now?? 6 Team League…have lots of choices. Villaueva,Bailey,Leake,Fiers,Fister,Sheets, all available and pretty hot.I was just curious how to fix those 2 categories. Thanks!

Ray – is there anything not to like about AJ Griffin? Great park, he’s shut down some excellent lineups and his K/BB also looks good. In a QS league, that’s playable regardless of league size, no?

It took an awful lot to land Josh Hamilton in a trade earlier this season, but he has been quite dismal since June 1st as you know. I have a pitching staff to die for (David Price, Yu Darvish, Gio González, Chris Capuano, Max Scherzer, Michael Fiers and Ray Halladay), but need more punch in my lineup.

Would I be better off trying to trade Hamilton straight-up for Braun or McCutchen? I can’t get Kemp.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hello Ray,
What are your thoughts on Chris Sale and his current situation? I was fortunate enough to draft him in a couple leagues and he has rewarded me with top 10 production all year. Lately I have noticed the dip in velocity and he certainly doesn’t look invincible any more.

Would you be good with me trading him straight up for Capuano right now? Or am I freaking out too soon. I am not one to make rash decisions with my guys, but I also don’t want to be left with nothing if the Sox shut him down.

Forgot to mention…thanks for all your help and great job on the daily league championship analysis on sunday. Got to listen to that on my way home from visiting the family.

Scott – with all the innings you’ve piled up, making a significant dent in your ERA and WHIP is going to be very difficult. You can hurt it much easier than improve it.

I would not drop better hurlers to add guys that are hot, because again, we’re not talking about much of a difference in ERA/WHIP. Plus, the better skills eventually win out anyway.

No way to “fix” the categories other than just having the best arms and hoping it works out. I don’t think the free agents are better than your guys, but if you feel like you have to make a move, Fiers/Sheets certainly could be worth an add… though I’d drop someone else other than those arms you listed.

Jon – Funny… didn’t see your question before I wrote about Griffin today – http://baseballguys.com/2012/07/30/daily-joust-wk-17-did-we-learn-anything/

Dave Hamilton – There is no way you could get Braun or McC straight up for Hamilton given how bad he’s struggled for two months. If you can do it, I would say do it immediately.

Nate – Glad you enjoyed the show on Sunday. Was a lot of fun being there to see them give away $100,000!

Sale has been remarkable. A 2.61 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, with nearly a K per inning… spectacular. has he had two rough games? Yes. But there was no way he was going to post a 2.11 ERA this season, regression was bound to happen. Trade him if you’re concerned about workload if you want, but you need to get way more back than Capuano. You think Sale has been bad of late, look at Caps #’s in July: 4.66 ERA, 1.59 WHIP. Given his injury filled past, it’s time to move Capuano not add him.
