Found out today that my league is doing away with AVG in favor of OPS. In your opinion do you think it is a good idea for leagues to do this and how/should this change strategy in a 5×5 head to head league? Also, would this type of change cause any major fluctuations to you rankings?
Thanks!

Update to my previous question above: After I brought it up, the league changed it to OBP instead of OPS, but still would that change from Avg to OBP have any affect on what I listed above and do you think it’s a good idea to use that as a stat instead of avg?
Thanks!

Jon – OPS is a better way to judge offensive prowess than AVG. There has been a lot of talk of trying to change things up in fantasy. In TOUT WARS, Mixed Lg., we’ve discussed going with OBP instead of average as the next step to take.
Yes, OPS does change player values. There is no way to answer that generically cause it’s done on a case by case basis. Derek Jeter hit .316, 5th in the AL last year, but his .791 OPS was less than Cody Ross (.807) who hit only .267. Players would need to be shuffled a bit.

Jonathan – There has been a lot of back and forth about OBP vs. AVG in TOUT. I think we’re gonna use it – thought being it IS a better way to evaluate what helps a player win in real life. Others say – that’s what points lgs are for. Can debate either side, but I’ll say this. Literally 16 years ago my home league went to OBP… I guess we were ahead of the curve a bit.

Hey Ray,
Keep up the great work over here!!
Coming down to Keeper day in our league and I have a group narrowed down, looking for your input. We play a 12 tm, standard 5×5 H2H. Got the 3rd pick in the draft and I am keeping Carlos Santana as a I have to. Must keep 2 of the following:
Y. Molina
Aramis Ramierez
A. Rios
Gio Gonzalez
Y. Gallardo
James Shields

Hi Ray
5×5 Roto, 10 team start two corners and two middle. In a vacumn would you trade a 8 dollar Billy Butler for a 1 dollar Aaron Hill. Can only keep for this year…
Thanks very Much
Mike

Hi Ray
My league pitching categories includes holds, saves, blown saves and relief losses.should I punt one or both of the save/holds categories since they are a wash? we also have era, whip, w,l,k,bb,k/bb,hr

Which player(s) do u think that has the best chance to be a bust( in the first 2 or 3 rounds)
By Ray Flowers on Feb 18, 2013
Polo – Beltre, Trout, Strasburg, Tulo at the top of my list.

Icehole – You got it my friend.
Since keeping Santana, pass on Yadier.
I don’t think you have to go SP since only 36 guys are kept. You can let your two go and still draft them where appropriate.
Go with Rios and Ramirez… unless you want to corner the C market.

Mike – If you can only keep for one year, yes, I’d take the big time savings and go with Hill.

Love it Ray, Listening to you on the air and you’re answering questions.
Thx

Cheeseman – Looks like you have 12 categories? The more cats you have, the more sense it can make to punt a category. You certainly can do that. I would prefer to go with RPs over SPs if you want to punt categories. You would have a shot to win: era, whip, l, bb, k/bb (NO reason to have k, bb and k/bb), hr, holds, saves.
